3 Things That Will Drive 2023 Interior Design Trends

What are 3 things that will drive 2023 Interior Design trends?

“Indoors and outdoors are more closely connected visually and that inspires an overall coordination of the palette. Outdoor settings, natural colors and materials are heavily influencing design because they foster a wellness mindset.” Charla Pettingill, director of product design at Shaw Floors.

The 1st Trend Driver is Human Interaction

We are not quite 2 weeks into 2023, but the coming trends in home decorating are taking shape already. People are craving social interactions; did you see the story about slow check-out lines? Supermarkets are designating check-out lines where conversations are encouraged. See this link to the article in Times Now. No doubt the pandemic lock downs caused people to be starved for interaction. Now that people are more comfortable, they are transitioning from conversations outside in their yards and gardens to inviting people into their homes. The increased need for human interaction combined with the popularity of biophilia in interior design will probably drive the trends for 2023.

The 2nd Trend Driver is Biophilia

Biophilia is the term for connecting nature to living spaces. In practice, biophilia means natural light sources, the use of green either in painted walls, or house plants, water features, decorative elements made of natural fibers, and open glass walls with views of nature. These types of design elements naturally connect with and foster a wellness mindset.

The 3rd Trend Driver is Wellness Mindset

The growth in interest in wellness is another trend driver for 2023. Due to the pandemic many people have made an effort to adopt a wellness mindset. They prioritize overall well-being and balance in multiple dimensions, such as physical, emotional, and spiritual health. They take a proactive approach to maintaining their health and well-being, rather than simply reacting to illness or disease. Furthermore, the wellness mindset often includes a focus on preventative measures such as eating nutritious food, exercise, stress management, getting enough sleep, and spending time outdoors all of which can contribute to a longer, healthier life. See our earlier post on the health benefits of getting back to nature by touching wood.

How do these trend drivers help you pick out flooring?

Let’s bring this story home for us. What does slow check-out lanes, biophilia, and a wellness mindset mean when someone is picking out flooring?

It means wood grains will remain popular as well as carpet that has natural patterns and color variations. The luminance of flooring will tend to be brighter to give rooms a fresh and reflective quality like open spaces. Dark stained wood grains and dark carpet colors will be less popular because homeowners will be looking for flooring that accentuates the colors. To contrast with the cool and breezy feel of wood flooring in the high activity areas of the home, comfortable carpet with natural patterns and colors will be used in the family room and bedrooms. Fully saturated colors and dark earth tones will be used on decorative elements like furniture, artwork, painted walls and trim.

2023 Color Trends

Every year Pantone picks a color of the year. For 2023 they picked a shade called Viva Magenta. Expect to see it in many products coming soon like the Hydrow Wave Rowing Machine shown in this link to an  article by ABC News. Paint makers are also seeing bright colors in the future for 2023. Benjamin Moore chose raspberry plush. Dunn Edwards favors Terra Rosa. Sherwin Williams toned it down a bit with Redend Point a less saturated flesh toned red. Canyon Ridge by Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart has also selected a flesh tone red.  You can see all these colors and more on this Inspo Board on pinterest.
