How To Install Carpet On Stairs

How to install carpet on stairs, starting from the top, select a durable carpet.  Shaw Aerial Arts in the color: Artisan Taupe is pictured above in this article. We recommend this carpet for stairs because it is made of 100% BCF ENDURA III NYLON for excellent durability. It is from Shaw’s Foundations Collection and features R2X® built-in stain & soil protection and SoftBac® carpet backing on limited styles. It wraps around stairs nicely installs firmly in place.

Find a great deal on the top brands of carpet like Shaw, DreamWeaver, Anderson Tuftex and Tarkett, to name only a few we carry at Saddleback Carpet & Flooring Inc. We don’t recommend carpeting stairs as a DIY project but if you are planning on doing it yourself, please let us help you. We offer a Free In-House consultation that will help you answer several important questions: First how to pick a carpet that will last a long time, fit your décor, and be firm under your feet? How much carpet should you buy? Stairs can be tricky to measure. What kind of safety considerations are important for your installation? How does the carpet transition to the flooring on each level?

Steps to Installing Carpet on Stairs

Preparation

Measure the surface area. When wrapping top and bottom you will need to factor in both sides of the stair. When installing a runner measure the risers as well as top surface. Plan the best way to cut out the needed pieces from the roll of carpet. Typically, it comes in 12’ wide rolls.
Remove any old carpet and padding. Be careful not to damage the walls or the transitions to the upper and lower levels.

Carpet Installation

  1. Start from the top: Begin by laying the carpet flat on the top landing, securing it with staples or tacks along the back edge.
  2. Tackle the corners: For a neat wrap-around finish, make diagonal cuts at the corners of the carpet tread, ensuring equal material on both sides for folding under. Fold and staple the excess carpet under the tread, creating a smooth corner.
  3. Wrap the risers: Fold the carpet down over the riser, stapling it securely along the underside of the tread above. Use carpet gripper on the riser for extra hold.
  4. Continue down the stairs: Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each step, ensuring the pattern (if any) matches up seamlessly.
  5. Finish at the bottom: Fold and staple the excess carpet under the bottom tread, similar to the top landing.

Tips and Tricks:

  • Use a carpet tucker tool to ensure the carpet is snug and wrinkle-free around the corners and edges.
  • Work slowly and carefully, measuring twice and cutting once to avoid mistakes.
  • Use double staples for extra strength, especially on high-traffic stairs.
  • Consider using professional carpet glue for added security, especially on complex corners or landings.
  • If you’re unsure about any step, consult a professional carpet installer or watch instructional videos for visual guidance.

Jerry has been PHENOMENAL starting from the first time I walked into his showroom to see the different types of flooring he carries. After doing lots of research, I decided to use Saddleback to redo all of the floors in my just-purchased home. Jerry has gone the extra mile to make sure I am pleased with every aspect of the work. Unlike some other business owners, he won't sell you something then leave the details to others; instead he shows up at the job site every day and remains deeply involved. The buck stops with him, and he knows it. He even sent me videos of the work in progress because I couldn't be there during the installation. Truly, my experience with Jerry and Saddleback Carpet & Flooring has been A+ from start to finish.

Jerry was very helpful when coming to measure and give me an estimate on my new home that desperately needed new carpet. His quote was fair and they estimated it would take two days to complete the job. His team was done in under a full day. Very pleased with the carpet and his crew. Thank you!
